Silage Smart
Just as corn selected for grain production have different characteristics, silage corns
are developed for specific purposes and farming operations as well. Yet, most seed companies approach the silage grower with a “one size fits all” approach to fulfilling the needs of producers looking to maximize their acres devoted to corn silage production. That’s where
SilageSmart™ comes in.
Fontanelle has developed corn silages specifically for your operation. Producers can now choose from the following types of
corns depending upon their intended use, farming practices, location and budget.
Highly Digestible Silage Corn (HDS)
HDS hybrids have high forage content of digestible forage, higher sugar content and softer, more digestible kernels. The
plants mature more slowly – giving a longer period for silage harvest in the desired plant moisture range. Compared to
traditional dual purpose corns, HDS have shown significantly higher NDF digestibility tested from 24-36 hours. High yields
of HDS (with traits) will allow cattle producers to increase the amount of corn silage in the ration to combat the high cost of
feed corn without the loss of production.
Dual Purpose Corn
Fontanelle is introducing a line of new corn numbers that offer the grower a choice of either high grain yield corn or high tonnage
silage. These corn products are ideal for the cattle producer allowing for the opportunity to adjust corn acre usage to
current market conditions.
HDS Characteristics:
- Extremely tall plant with more leaves above the ear.
- Softer kernel texture – little or no kernel bypass.
- Slower drying for longer harvest window.
- High tonnage produces more milk per acre.
- Available in new genetics and seed traits.
Dual Purpose Corn Characteristics:
- Look for the identifying SilageSmart logo.
- Flexibility to harvest either grain or cut forhigh tonnage silage.
- Available in the newest of genetics and traits.
- Some corn numbers selected for thosemarginal acres and economically priced.
